What: New construction, 84 m2, three-story house, wood structure. From chalet to single-family permanent residence.
Who: Early-retiree couple, owners of a small forestry company.
Where: In the remote forest of the Laurentian mountain range, two hours from Montreal.
SketchUp and Revit were used from concept to construction drawings.
Working from the negative space by cutting out portions of the landscape surrounding the site. The main focus of the interior space are the cutouts showing the changing colour of the surrounding landscape.
Box-shaped structure to keep it energy efficient. One extruded banquette area for accent. Sloped metal roof for snow to fall off. Open second floor for maximum light. The large front windows in the living area offer a clear view down the sloped entryway. Vertical windows to emphasize the verticality of the trees: there is no separation between you and the outdoors when you stand close to them.
NO BASEMENT. Because basements are for incanting malevolent spirits, hiding skeletons and shameful family members, or indulging survivalist fantasies. They are not for living. Even objects look unsettled.
